I Am Not Sleepy! by Markita Staples-Green

I Am Not Sleepy! is a cute bedtime story about Emmy, a little girl who doesn’t want to go to sleep. She tries to stall her mom by asking for more stories, water, hugs, and other things. Her mom is patient, and understanding, and tries to make bedtime fun and relaxing.

The book has colourful illustrations that show Emmy’s expressions and actions. The characters are diverse and lovable. The dialogue is simple and easy to follow. The book also shows some respectful parenting techniques, such as validating Emmy’s feelings and offering choices.

However, I felt that the book was too long and repetitive for a bedtime story. It had 32 pages, which is more than most picture books for toddlers and preschoolers. Some of the scenes were very similar, such as Emmy asking for more stories or water. I think the book could have been more concise, without losing its message.

I also felt that the book was not very original or exciting. It reminded me of other bedtime stories I have read before, such as Goodnight Moon or The Going to Bed Book. I didn’t find anything surprising or funny in the book. The book could have used more creativity or humour to make it stand out.

Overall, I think I Am Not Sleepy! is a sweet and gentle bedtime story, but not a very memorable one. I would recommend it to parents looking for a calm and positive way to put their children to sleep, but not to children looking for a fun and engaging story. I would give it 3 stars out of 5.
